So you run a business and you do social media marketing and you are on Twitter as part of your marketing that is great! Now one of the questions I get asked a lot is how many times a day should I post/tweet on Twitter?
Twitter Is Busy and Noisy
That being said you could get away with tweeting every 15-20 minutes. The home feed is very busy and minutes after you tweet it will be getting far down the home feed. Twitter as of right does not have an algorithm like Facebook or Instagram which determines who sees your posts. The Twitter home feed is in chronological order. Meaning the most recent tweets are seen first. That is a very good thing because if you have a large following a lot of people will see your tweets. Not a large percentage however because it depends on how many of your followers are on Twitter when you send out a tweet. So if you have a following of 5,000 maybe only 500 are on Twitter at that moment you send out a tweet. That means that 500 may see your tweet, but most likely only half or less will see it because the other people on Twitter at that time may be doing something else besides looking at their home feed.
It Also Depends On What You Are Posting/Tweeting
If you are tweeting only about your business and promoting stop now! Here is an article about adding value first on social media. If you are only promoting I suggest that you only tweet once per day. It’s great to promote on social media, but just don’t do it too much. I stick to the 80/20 rule. I put out about 80% great content and promote only around 20% of the time.
If you are tweeting value like motivational quotes, great info, educating people, that is great! You are adding value first and that will earn you more engagements on social media and will eventually lead to more business and trust with your audience.
So Cmon’ Already! How Many Times Should I Tweet Per Day??
Overall I suggest that you tweet between 5-8 times per day. If you tweet about an hour apart that would be once per hour for most of the business day. However like I said earlier Twitter is a busy social media platform so you could tweet every 15-20 minutes without over doing it, but that would take a lot of time and you would need to create a lot of great content to tweet that much every single day!
Stick with a good number and find what works for you and your business. My suggestion is 5-8 tweets per day, and about 2-4 times per day on the weekend. You might find that tweeting 3 times per day works best for you. Find the right balance and take the time to test what works the best. Take some notes for a week and start to find a number that works best. Also use your Twitter Analytics to see what kind of tweets and what days work better to tweet. Click here to read an article about Analyzing your social media marketing efforts.
Pro Tip: Post some of your tweets later in the day when Twitter quiets down a little you may see more engagements.
So how many times per day do you tweet? Like I said I tweet between 5-8 times per day and maybe half that number 2-4 times per day on the weekends. Let me know in the comments below what works best for you on Twitter.

Some business owners look at marketing as an expense and try to cut it down or even worse cut it out completely. That is a bad move marketing should be looked at as an investment for your business.
Marketing Is An Investment!
If you are paying for something that grows your business it should not be considered an expense. It should be considered an investment! Marketing grows your business if done right. I’ve run into business owners who say “Rocco I can’t spend any money on social media marketing right now because we can’t take on another expense.” I can understand that things might be tight, but I tell them that maybe there are unnecessary expenses they could cut out somewhere to make room to help grow their business through some social media marketing. Let’s face it there are always unnecessary expenses that can be cut to make room for something that can grow your business.
Social media marketing is (in my opinion) a necessary part of a marketing budget. Social media marketing should be in every businesses marketing plan in some way. It is an investment that won’t pay off in the short term, but will pay off in the long term. It is a way of building trust and brand recognition with your targeted market. Social media is a great way to show off your brand and tell your customers about your story in your own words. Social media is a great way to build relationships with your customers.
“If you have more money than brains, you should focus on outbound marketing. If you have more brains than money, you should focus on inbound marketing.” – Guy Kawasaki
Marketing Is Not Only About Money
Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying you need to spend tons and tons of money on marketing. You spend what you really can afford to spend according to your businesses budget. You do however want to spend a good percentage of your budget on marketing and sales because marketing and sales are what drives revenue. Anything that drives revenue to your business should get top priority on your businesses budget!
Some marketing is time consuming instead of spending money on marketing it may cost you more time. If it is worth it spend some extra time doing some online marketing, content marketing, or SEO. You may lose some time, but if it brings in customers it is not lost time at all. It is a time investment!
Bringing in more customers is the name of the game in business and marketing should accomplish that. You do want to stick with the marketing that works. If you find some good sales techniques and marketing channels that work stay the course with them until they fade.
Try New Marketing Strategies Also
I will talk about social media marketing here because that’s what I specialize in and I know the concerns some customers have.
Some customers tell me that they don’t need to do social media marketing or that they aren’t going to be doing social media marketing at this moment. I think some are just scared to try it because they don’t know much about social media marketing and they think it could be a waste of money. Some business owners say it because they are too stubborn to try something new. Don’t be the business owner that is afraid or too stubborn to try something new! Those business owners are getting passed up by their competitors online because they don’t do social media marketing or even have a website. Imagine that, some business owners I talk with don’t even have a website in this day and age!! That is crazy I had a website even in the 90’s!
My main point here is don’t be afraid to try a new approach in your marketing. Spend a little money and give it time to work. If after six months or a year it doesn’t work move on. Just don’t spend too much money on new marketing until you see some results. Always allocate money in your marketing budget for testing marketing techniques. Testing some marketing techniques is what helps you land on the marketing/advertising that works.
Spending 10% of your marketing budget on some new marketing tactics isn’t going to kill your business. Start out with that and if it is working add more money to it in your future budget.
Marketing Is Not An Expense
So as you can see marketing should not be looked at as an expense. It is an investment in the growth of your business. Spending thousands on a brand new extra fancy desk is an expense. Marketing is an investment that will pay off maybe not immediately, but in the future.
Invest in your business increase the budget on anything that will grow revenue and profits!! Get rid of unnecessary expenses to make room for your marketing budget.

This is the first article in the new category Your Business Series. In this series of articles we will talk about how you can use social media for a specific industry.
Your Business Series Article #1 – How To Use Social Media If You Own A Restaurant.
Owning a restaurant is a fun yet complicated business venture. There are so many things that can go wrong. In fact most restaurants close within three years of opening. It’s a tough industry, but it also can be very rewarding. If operated right you can have a restaurant or multiple restaurants that runs itself with the right management. That could mean more time for you and your family. Of course it will take some hard work to get to that point. Social media marketing is part of that work. You will need to have a good social media marketing plan in place if you own a restaurant or multiple restaurants. If you are not sure if social media marketing is right for your business here are 10 reasons why you need to be doing social media marketing!
Get A Good Feel For Your Restaurant
Sit down and write down a good profile about your restaurant and how you want it to be perceived online. Do this before starting any social media marketing campaign. I compiled a nice list of Questions You Should Ask Before Starting A Social Media Marketing Campaign click on the link and feel free to use the questions when evaluating your restaurant and putting together a good profile that will help guide you when finding a personality for your restaurant.
Now that you put together a profile of your restaurant and know how you want your restaurant to be perceived online it’s time to start coming up with some good content for posting. This is the fun part! You want to come up with content that is eye catching and will get people to stop in their tracks while scrolling through their social media feed!
Good content can be graphics, pictures, links, live video or regular video just to name a few. Video is hot right now and growing bigger each day. As a restaurant a video or live video can be very powerful. Consider that when coming up with your social media marketing strategy.
Some Fun Content Ideas
Pictures of the food
Videos of the food
Pictures of people eating your food
Video of people eating your food
Pictures of any events the restaurant is hosting
Live Video of any events the restaurant is hosting
Specials of the day
Pictures of the restaurant
360 degree videos of the restaurant
Live videos of your chefs making a meal and giving instructions and recipes on how to make a similar meal. Just don’t give away the secret recipes of your top or signature meals.
Pictures of any local sports teams you sponsor
Awards you have won as a restaurant
If you are remodeling or making some upgrades to the restaurant share them on social media.
The restaurant sign
Pictures of some of your top customers (with their permission)
Pictures and videos of your staff
That’s a short list I could go all day with all the stuff you could post! A restaurant can really be shown off on social media. The problem is a lot of restaurant owners don’t really know how to do it. Remember you cannot just keep promoting over and over. If your audience see’s this they will tune you out or worse unfollow you! Make the posts engaging and get people talking! Add value first and the customers will follow. Don’t worry about ROI right away. Social media marketing is a marathon and it will take time to build relationships. If you don’t rush it you will see results after awhile and it will be worth it.
How do I know that? Because as of the writing of this article that’s how I get about 70% of my business. Yes a social media marketing agency that walks the walk! I figured if we are a social media marketing agency we better live by what we preach and that means doing great social media marketing for our business as well as our clients. Some social media marketing agencies are not very good at promoting their own business. How are they going to be very valuable to you?? Before hiring a social media marketing agency make sure to check out their social media pages first. As a matter of fact if you want check out our social media pages. (you should see the social media buttons on this page)
Do Special Social Media Promotions
Ok back to how you can be more effective on social media. Another idea on top of the ones listed above is to do a special promotion only for people who follow you on social media. Instead of getting into all of that here is an article I wrote on How to do Facebook Fan Only Promotions. Once you read that you can apply the same principles to other social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, Snapchat, and any other social media platforms that come along in the future. Giving you fans a special promotion shows you care and that you appreciate that they follow you on social media. It’s a great way to build a rapport with your fans on social media.
Just Have Fun!
A restaurant is a fun business and you are only limited by your own creativity. I love helping restaurants with their social media accounts because it is one industry where you can get really creative with the marketing! Use some of the advice in this article along with some of the other articles mentioned in here. Put together a plan and go with it! If it is not working change it up. Marketing is just a series of many tests and trials to see what works. Keep the stuff that is working and throw out the stuff that isn’t working.

Social media marketing is a fun career to get into. There are lots of benefits to it. One great benefit is you get paid to be on social media all day! Most people go on social media to post things and to see what their friends are up to. As a social media expert you get to go on social media everyday and get paid to do it!!
Obviously it’s not going to be all fun and games there are strategies to use when on social media to make it effective for business, but you can make it fun and interesting with some planning.
Running Your Own Business or Working For A Company?
You can start your own business as a social media consultant or work for another company as part of their social media team. It is up to you how you want to proceed in this career. I personally like working for myself so I started my own business in social media marketing. It takes a lot of work and discipline. It is not as easy as it sounds, but if you are dedicated to running your own social media marketing agency you can do it with the understanding that it will take time and hard work. Lots and lots of hard work! (don’t forget that part!)
If you work for another company in their social media marketing department you will get a guaranteed paycheck and some great experience. You won’t have the freedom of being a business owner, but you will still get to do what you love while getting paid. It really is up to you how and where you want to take your career as a social media expert. If you started off working for another company in their social media department you can later take that experience and work for yourself in the future.
Learn About Social Media Marketing Everyday
Social media is a never ending process and it changes almost everyday. You must dedicate some time each week to catch up on the changes that each social media platform is making. Use good resources like Social Media Examiner, Social Media Today, Buffer, Fun To Be Social (self promotion right there…lol) and Hootsuite to name a few. I use most of these sites to get my news, updates, and strategy tips for social media marketing. They are all great resources so put them on your list.
Never stop learning about social media marketing because if you do you will get lost with the constant changes.
Develop Great Content
Content is the key to engaging and keeping people interested on social media. Make sure that you are putting out fresh content daily! You can make some great graphics with motivational quotes, business tips, good advice for your industry, funny pictures, etc. or you can make some quality video that people will want to watch. It doesn’t have to be long, a good 3 minute video can go a long way on social media. If you are going to make some graphics you can use online tools to make some great looking graphics. I use Canva the most I am used to it and I can make some really cool stuff on there. The best thing is Canva is Free! This is not a promoted link I just like using it so much I figured it was worth mentioning. I even created the graphic for this blog post on Canva.
Start With One Or Two Social Media Platforms
If you are just starting out in social media marketing I suggest that you start out with only one or two social media platforms until you start getting really good at them. Each social media platform is different and they all have their own feel to them for effective social media marketing. What you post on one might not work on another. The times of day vary on best times to post for each social media platform. Even the wording needs to be changed when posting from one social media platform to the next. That is why it’s a great idea to start learning one or two social media platforms before going all in. Don’t start by trying to learn Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Snapchat, Periscope, YouTube and Google+ all at once it could become overwhelming. If it becomes overwhelming then it will not be fun!
Pick the one or two social media platforms that you really want to learn and become good at them. Think of which ones you have the most fun on and pick them. After that you can move on to the third platform and then the fourth until you get really good. There is nothing wrong with only being good at only a couple social media platforms. Nobody can be awesome at all of them!
Follow Influencers in Social Media
Follow the top people in social media marketing and read their posts and tweets. They are always giving out some awesome tips! Everyday you can learn something new from the people who know lots about social media marketing. You just need to follow them and learn from their wisdom and years of experience!
So you are wondering who the top social media influencers are in social media marketing? Here is a list of some of the ones I follow; (in no particular order)
Gary Vaynerchuck (@garyvee)
Kim Garst (@kimgarst)
Guy Kawasaki (@GuyKawasaki)
Mari Smith (@MariSmith)
Jeff Bullas (jeffbullas)
Tim Fargo (@alphabetsuccess)
Jay Baer (@jaybaer)
Carlos Gill (@CarlosGil83)
Alex Khan (@1AlexKhan)
Chris “Kubby” Kubbernus (@ChrisKubby)
That is a short list of some of the top social media influencers. I follow all the above and learn something new everyday from at least one of them. Follow them, learn from them, and connect with them on social media. What a great age we live in when you can learn from the best in real time. That is the power of social media!
Be Dedicated To Social Media
You must be dedicated to be a great social media expert. Being a social media expert is a full time job and requires your time as such. Don’t go into it thinking you will be able to work a couple hours a day and be effective because you probably won’t be. It takes dedication to ongoing learning, engaging with others, creating great content, and standing out from the crowd on social media.
If you are running it as your own business it will take even more dedication because not only do you have to be good at social media, but you have to run the business part also. Like anything worthwhile it will take work, but if you love what you do it won’t feel like work. Just know it will take time to be really good at social media marketing. Don’t assume it will be easy money because when you find out that there is actual work involved you may give up too early.
You Have To Know Marketing
It is called social media marketing for a reason. In order to be a social media expert you do need to have some good knowledge of marketing. You can’t just throw a 13 year old on social media for your business just because you think they know something about social media. They may know about social media, but they don’t know about social media marketing. Believe it or not I actually had a business owner tell me they don’t need help with social media marketing because their kid does it for them! Whaaaat?? A kid running your marketing?? Not gonna happen in my business!
The main point here is that you do need to have an understanding of marketing to become a great social media expert. Learn as much as you can about marketing. You can even take some marketing classes to get a good understanding of marketing. I personally have a degree in marketing and over 17 years of experience in marketing and that has helped me tremendously in the field of social media marketing.
Interact With Others
Use social media to be social and interact with others. Don’t just post stuff on social media and not interact with other people. Take time to leave comments and like their posts. Leave genuine comments not just short generic comments. Add value when interacting with others to help build relationships on social media. To become a great social media expert you will need to interact and be social.
Learn How To Use The Ad Platforms On Social Media
Each social media platform is different when it comes to setting up ads. Facebook Ads, Promoted Pins (Pinterest), and Twitter Ads they are all different and have a different feel and features. You will want to read and learn as much as you can about each ad platform. Start with one when you are first starting out. I suggest starting with the biggest one Facebook. Their ad platform is easier to learn. It’s just a matter of getting a feel for it and knowing your target market.
Play around with some low cost testing of ads. Just $1.00 per day is a good way to test some of your ads to see what is working and what is not working. While you are learning don’t spend too much money. Spend a little as you learn. Look at the ads cost as a small fee for learning. Watch your budget while testing and monitoring your ads. Analyze your ads and stats often! After awhile you start to learn more and your social media ads will become more effective. Just be patient and understand it will take some time to learn how to do ads on social media.
You will make mistakes when learning how to use ads on social media and that is OK. The main thing is to learn without spending too much money. Make mistakes, but don’t spend a ton of money while learning!
Becoming a great social media expert will take some work. It is a great career that is only getting bigger! Once you learn the basics you will become better in other areas of social media marketing. If you really want to become a social media expert put in the time and effort and it will be a fun and exciting career! I have fun everyday with my job and the better I get the more fun it is. Use the tips and advice in this article to become better at social media marketing and never stop learning!
