If you own or run a business one thing that you should be doing is using social media to tell your story. Tell your story, tell your businesses story, tell your employees story. Doing this can give your customers an inside look at your business. They will feel more of a connection and this builds trust.
This is actually the first thing I do when we start working on a new social media marketing campaign for our clients. Step one of the process is to get a good profile of the company and find out what their story is, and why their customers should care about their story. This is an important step that we take to ensure that we can give our clients the absolute best way to use social media so that their customers can relate.
Without a story it’s hard to show your customers why they should care about your business. Years back it was not that common to really tell a story about a business. Most businesses would just buy T.V., newspaper, billboard, and magazine ads and just push their products. Today’s marketing is much different. If you just push products constantly now people will ignore you. Why? Because you are not adding any value to the relationship. You should give value first before expecting to ask for someones business.
Telling your story is a great way to add value by building a connection with your customers. When they need what you sell they will think of you because of the connection and familiarity you have build with them through your story.
Telling your story will also help build authority in your industry. Give great advice to people when they ask. Write a blog to keep them educated and informed about your niche.
Why Should They Care?
Your story should be interesting to get people to care. Tell your audience why you started the business. Let them know some of the challenges you are facing. Show them why your products or services are worth their attention. Most of all be FUN! Get them involved some way by asking your followers and customers for their feedback.
Keep Them Updated
As you are making progress with your business keep your followers and customers up to date on what is going on. People love transparency and transparency helps build trust. Be a transparent business and you will get much more engagement on social media.
Don’t just be boring and post basic stuff on social media. Let your audience in on your story. Be transparent so that they can follow along with your business story. Bring attention to the employees and management. Don’t hide behind a logo and expect people will connect with you on a personal level. Go out today and tell your story on social media!

So you own a car dealership or maybe you manage one and you are wondering how you can use social media to bring in more business to your car dealership and sell more cars don’t worry we got you covered!
If you own or manage a car dealership live video is a great social media tool to use. You have the power to instantly let your customers see what you have going on at the car dealership. Some ways you could use live video are;
Product Demos: Show your automobiles in action, show off the great benefits of certain vehicles. Do this live and give demonstrations to show why they should buy that vehicle. If they can see the benefits live it might peak their interest more!
Sales Events: If you are having a big sales event going on, put that on live video. Give a tour of the building and car lot and show off the sale prices! Tell your live audience of other things going on during the sales event like free food, drinks, etc.
Introduce Sales Staff and Management: Use live video to show off your staff and have them do a “take over” for a day so that they can show off their personality to potential customers.
Repair Shop: If your car dealership has a repair shop attached, do a live video and talk about the benefits of why your repair shop is a good place to bring a vehicle for repairs. Also let customers see some of the prices of basic repairs and specials so that they have an idea. Use the live video to tell them about any awards you may have won for the repair shop.
Answer Questions: If you get a decent sized audience for your live videos you will have people who ask questions and leave comments. This is a great way to instantly connect and maybe even make a sale that very day! Make sure to answer back during the live broadcast.
A lot of car dealerships do this and it’s a good thing. Showing happy people standing by a car they just bought is good for business. The mistake I see a lot is that too many car dealerships ONLY do this. Don’t believe me look up a local car dealership and chances are most of their posts are people standing by a car they just bought. There is way more to social media marketing than just posting a generic picture of the same thing over and over.
Don’t get me wrong this is a great way to show off some happy customers and you should do this, but don’t get stuck in the rut of only showing customers by their new car purchase. Expand your horizons and change it up a bit.
Updates On New Inventory
The car industry is always changing with new and improved vehicles and features. Use social media to tell your customers about the new inventory that you have or will be getting.
Community Events and Charities
If your car dealership is heavily involved in the community (and it should be) social media is a great way to show others what you care about. Talk about the charities you support. Show off pictures of teams or events that you sponsor. Give people that sense that you do care about the local community. Don’t do it to brag, just post things to show others that you care and to maybe even get more support for the local charities and events.
Updates and Improvements
If you have some new updates and improvements happening to the building you can show your customers what is happening on social media. Post pictures and videos of the improvements as they happen! Bring your customers along for the ride (no pun intended) on the improvements you are making to the business and the building. Tell them how the new improvements will help with the overall customer experience! Invite them down to come check out the new improvements or promote a Grand Opening.
Share Relevant Information
There is always something new to talk about in the automotive industry. Find good articles that you think your customers will like to read and share them on your social media. Are there new safety regulations taking effect? Share an article or video about it. Keep your customers educated and up to date and they will remember you when they are thinking about buying there next car.
If you sell cars and you know that there is a massive recall on a certain model post about it on your social media pages. When you post about it tell them how they can take the next step to get their vehicle fixed. Be proactive to show your customers that you care about them and their safety.
There are so many ways to be fun and effective on social media if you own a car dealership. Don’t fall into the trap of just posting the same old stuff over and over again. Get creative to keep your customers and fans engaged. If you can do that you can create loyal customers who are happy that they follow you. Keeping your social media fun will only have your customers looking forward to your next post!

If you don’t have goals you really have no plan. You will need to put together some real goals that you hope to accomplish with your social media marketing campaign. Without goals you will not know which direction to head, how much to spend, how much time it will take, what kind of return on investment (ROI) you will get out of it, etc. You will be like a ship with no direction.
I’ve worked with businesses that really had no clear cut goals for their marketing. I’m not just talking about social media marketing all marketing needs to be clearly defined!
Start With The Budget
Always start with the budget because you will need to know how much resources you will have to work with. This includes cash and time. I suggest that you start with a yearly budget and plan it out over the 12 months.
When dividing the budget into 12 months you will want to consider your busiest months and slowest months and figure out how much to put into those months. There is no one answer you can look at it different ways.
Busy Months: If you put more marketing efforts in at this time you may make a lot more or you can put less money and save that money for the slow months.
Slow Months: If you put more marketing efforts in at this time you may get a little more business during the slow times or you could just save that money and put it into the busy months to generate more revenue to make up for the slow months.
A lot of how you plan out your marketing budget will depend on your industry, location, money available, size of your company, and products/services.
Pro Tip: A good way to figure out a budget is to plan 70% and leave 30% open for adding to other marketing, or to current marketing that has been effective. Always leave some room to work with.
Where You Want To Invest Your Marketing Dollars
I always suggest that if you’re new or limited on resources start with only one or two social media platforms. This will give you time to get familiar with these social media platforms and to get good at them.
This also works really good for your budget planning. Try not to spread your money too thin by advertising on a lot of social media platforms. Stick with one or two and you will have more money and time to invest in those one or two social media platforms.
Let’s say you have $10,000 to invest in social media marketing for the year. If you are advertising only on Facebook you can make that $10,000 go a long way. If you were going to use that $10,000 on four social media platforms you only have $2,500 to invest on each.
If you can attack one social media platform with more resources you will be much better off than spreading your resources thin on multiple social media platforms. Pick the one social media platform that works best for your business and really crush it.
Pro Tip: Not sure which social media platform to start with? My suggestion is to pick the two that you think are best for reaching your demographic. Spend some time building an audience and learn which one gives you the best engagements.
Figure Out The Main Goal
Why are you doing social media marketing? Are you using it to get more leads, get more sales, build brand awareness, to connect with customers? You will need to figure out exactly why you are doing social media marketing in the first place.
Once you know your reason you can decide which platform is best to hit your goals. Don’t start a social media marketing campaign without knowing what you want out of it. Just remember that social media marketing is a marathon so don’t expect major ROI from the get go. (unless you have a huge marketing budget) If it were that easy everyone would be millionaires from using social media.
If fast sales are what you are looking for it probably won’t happen until you nurture relationships on social media. This can take time, but sales will come you just need to be patient. If you know this going into a social media marketing campaign it will reduce a lot of stress.
Define Engagement Numbers
A good way to tell if your social media marketing is going well is by engagements. If you are getting some good engagements that means your customers and followers are finding some value from what you are posting.
When defining your goals you will want to clearly define how many engagements you want per day, per week, or per month. When defining engagement numbers remember your budget and how much time you have to commit to social media. Keep your numbers reasonable so that you have a realistic goal to hit.
Remember also that organic reach is is dropping and getting free engagements is getting harder. You may have to pay for a big percentage of engagements through some advertising. This is something to consider when you define your engagement numbers.
Customer engagements are a way of building relationships with your customers online. That’s why I said not to expect a quick ROI on social media. Use engagements as a gateway to promote down the road as customers and followers look forward to your content.
If you are getting a good number of customer engagements you can use that trust you’ve built to promote your products and services. Just do it sparingly or give away free stuff to build an email list to generate leads.
What should my engagement goal be? A lot will depend on two things your budget and your time. If you have a person who handles your social media for you I’m sure that time is built into the budget. If you don’t have someone who handles your social media you need to factor in the time you have to commit to social media.
Start with a monthly goal and go from there. You can always adjust the goal after a couple of months. I like to keep things simple because a lot of people over complicate things. Just start with a monthly goal and you will be able to clearly define your engagements as you go.
Setting goals for social media marketing is very important. You need to know why you are doing it in the first place. There is no reason just to do random posts here and there because you think it will be good for business. Most likely you would be wasting your time without clear cut goals.

So you run a business and you do social media marketing and you are on Twitter as part of your marketing that is great! Now one of the questions I get asked a lot is how many times a day should I post/tweet on Twitter?
Twitter Is Busy and Noisy
That being said you could get away with tweeting every 15-20 minutes. The home feed is very busy and minutes after you tweet it will be getting far down the home feed. Twitter as of right does not have an algorithm like Facebook or Instagram which determines who sees your posts. The Twitter home feed is in chronological order. Meaning the most recent tweets are seen first. That is a very good thing because if you have a large following a lot of people will see your tweets. Not a large percentage however because it depends on how many of your followers are on Twitter when you send out a tweet. So if you have a following of 5,000 maybe only 500 are on Twitter at that moment you send out a tweet. That means that 500 may see your tweet, but most likely only half or less will see it because the other people on Twitter at that time may be doing something else besides looking at their home feed.
It Also Depends On What You Are Posting/Tweeting
If you are tweeting only about your business and promoting stop now! Here is an article about adding value first on social media. If you are only promoting I suggest that you only tweet once per day. It’s great to promote on social media, but just don’t do it too much. I stick to the 80/20 rule. I put out about 80% great content and promote only around 20% of the time.
If you are tweeting value like motivational quotes, great info, educating people, that is great! You are adding value first and that will earn you more engagements on social media and will eventually lead to more business and trust with your audience.
So Cmon’ Already! How Many Times Should I Tweet Per Day??
Overall I suggest that you tweet between 5-8 times per day. If you tweet about an hour apart that would be once per hour for most of the business day. However like I said earlier Twitter is a busy social media platform so you could tweet every 15-20 minutes without over doing it, but that would take a lot of time and you would need to create a lot of great content to tweet that much every single day!
Stick with a good number and find what works for you and your business. My suggestion is 5-8 tweets per day, and about 2-4 times per day on the weekend. You might find that tweeting 3 times per day works best for you. Find the right balance and take the time to test what works the best. Take some notes for a week and start to find a number that works best. Also use your Twitter Analytics to see what kind of tweets and what days work better to tweet. Pro Tip: Post some of your tweets later in the day when Twitter quiets down a little you may see more engagements.

If you are remodeling or making some upgrades to the restaurant share them on social media.

That’s a short list I could go all day with all the stuff you could post! A restaurant can really be shown off on social media. The problem is a lot of restaurant owners don’t really know how to do it. Remember you cannot just keep promoting over and over. If your audience see’s this they will tune you out or worse unfollow you! Make the posts engaging and get people talking! Add value first and the customers will follow. Don’t worry about ROI right away. Social media marketing is a marathon and it will take time to build relationships. If you don’t rush it you will see results after awhile and it will be worth it.
How do I know that? Because as of the writing of this article that’s how I get about 70% of my business. Yes a social media marketing agency that walks the walk! Once you read that you can apply the same principles to other social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Google+, Snapchat, and any other social media platforms that come along in the future. Giving you fans a special promotion shows you care and that you appreciate that they follow you on social media. It’s a great way to build a rapport with your fans on social media.
Just Have Fun!
A restaurant is a fun business and you are only limited by your own creativity. I love helping restaurants with their social media accounts because it is one industry where you can get really creative with the marketing! Use some of the advice in this article along with some of the other articles mentioned in here. Put together a plan and go with it! If it is not working change it up. Marketing is just a series of many tests and trials to see what works. Keep the stuff that is working and throw out the stuff that isn’t working.

Everybody likes to see pictures of other businesses behind the curtain. Showing pictures and videos of your office and employees will show the human side to your business. When coming up with a plan to do social media marketing find a way to add in content that will show your business behind the scenes. You could post pictures of the office, employees having fun, employee of the month, some new equipment your office just got, etc. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there for people to see the awesome people that work at your business!

If you have a blog it’s good to promote it to your audience on social media. Don’t be afraid to put links to your blog posts on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. If your blog has some great information then post links to it! Let your audience know that you have some great advice for them through your blog.
Having some great product pictures and videos you can put on your social media can be a strong selling point. Make sure they are really good pictures and high quality video that really make the product stand out. Don’t just put pictures and videos of the product with a sheet in the background. Be creative and put pictures and videos showing the product in use or how it can be useful. Make it interesting to get some good engagement. Video demonstrations for products are getting more attention. Use video more when showing off your products. Better yet use live video like Facebook Live to show off your products! Since our name is Fun To Be Social it would not be right if we didn’t mention to have fun on social media! Just be random on some days and find fun stuff you can post on social media. Be attentive and ready to snap a picture or shoot a video if something funny pops up! Post pics of fails at the office that are funny, or product fails that are funny. It will get people to engage more. Whatever you do just try to have fun on social media and your audience will engage and have fun too!

Anytime you post stuff on social media it gets you seen. Depending on how many followers you have and how you use your hashtags you can be seen by a lot of people on every post. This applies to any social media type of post; pins, snaps, tweets, etc. the more people you can get in front of the better. In this article I compare how social media posts can relate to a huge billboard in terms of marketing.
Each Post Is Like A Billboard
Think about it each person that sees your post is like a car going by a billboard. If you have a good social media presence it’s like your billboard is on a super busy road and lots people are seeing it! If you don’t have a good social media presence or a very small audience it is like a billboard on a slow backstreet. Every time you post people will see it. What you decide to put on your billboard (your post) is up to you.
Make It Eye Catching
Because like a billboard on a busy road people are cruising through their social media to find interesting stuff. If it doesn’t catch their attention they will keep cruising and not even pay attention. Make sure that when you post a video, picture, graphic, etc that it will really GRAB their attention!
I know it’s impossible to have every single post be so great that people stop dead in their tracks to look at it and care. The ideal is to do it enough times that it makes an impact. Not every post has to be amazing.
Create some content that will get people talking and engaging. Don’t promote too much.I stick to the 90/10 rule, 90% good helpful and fun content, 10% promoted posts. Sometimes I don’t even promote my site or social media marketing services for a week or two. I just put out the best content I possibly can. I would rather build an audience and build relationships than promote. I think it is more effective in the long run.
Impressions Are The Cars Going By
Each car that goes by a billboard are the views it may receive. That’s why it costs more to put a billboard on a busy road because the potential for more views is there.
Same thing with social media posts, the more impressions the better. You want your post to get in front of as many people as possible. That’s why it is important to build your social media presence! The bigger your audience the bigger your reach. Remember just because there are lots of impressions on a post doesn’t mean all those people really payed attention. It’s just a stat to show you how many people may have seen your post.
“Likes” Are The Actual People Looking At Your Billboard
Think about it, when people like your post they are really paying attention to what you just posted on social media. Like a billboard it’s pretty much like someone driving in a car looking up at your billboard and saying “Cool I like that!” They acknowledged your post and that is very awesome!!
“Comments” Are Them Telling You How Much They Liked Your Billboard
When someone comments they are telling you that they really payed attention to your post. They will let you know what they thought about it or add something to the post with a comment. They might even have something negative to say or disagree. Either way they were intrigued enough to stop and leave a comment!
When people comment it’s like they took the time to email you or call you about your billboard. That means that they really liked it, hated it, or wanted to add to it. All good things because you got their attention!
“Shares” Are Like People Taking Pictures Of Your Billboard And Showing Their Friends
When someone shares your post they really, really like it! They like it so much that they shared it to show others. How cool is that!! I love when people share my posts because for one it will reach more people, and second that means it was good enough to get people to share and that means I added some great value or entertainment for them on that post.
When you apply this to the concept of a billboard it’s like they snapped a picture of your billboard and sent it to their friends to show them the cool billboard they just seen! When they do that people who wouldn’t have seen the billboard before now will get to see it!
Posts and Billboards Are Pretty Similar
They are similar in the fact of how people see your business. I used to pay attention to billboards and think to myself I wonder if the businesses who pay to put those billboards up actually get any results? Some do some don’t I assume.
The point of this article was to show you how social media can be applied to how old school offline marketing was or is. About 15 years ago that was one of the few ways to reach a big audience. Today with social media we can reach big audiences with the click of a mouse and with still very low cost.
We Are Living In A Great Age For Marketing!
Social media has made it so much better and easier to reach large audiences that I think a lot of people don’t realize how lucky we are now. Our capacity to get creative and gain great exposure for business is so much more attainable these days.
A billboard will cost over $1,000 per month in most cities plus set up fees. With social media you can get that same kind or better exposure for free! This goes to show the power of social media in today’s business world.
Work hard and build your social media through posting great content, engaging with your audience, and answering customer questions and you will have some great marketing power right at your fingertips!

People want to connect with you and your company on social media to learn more about your products, services, employees, company culture, etc. They want to learn more about why they should do business with your company. Give them a reason to do business with you!
Really figure out how you want your company to be portrayed on social media. Take your time and put together a good profile of your business on paper. What kind of products/services do you have? What is your company culture? How do you want to be perceived as a company?
Have a meeting with your employees to get some advice from them about how your company should be on social media. You would be surprised how insightful your employees can be when it comes to how your company is seen or should be seen in the public eye.
Whatever you do make sure to have a plan before starting so that you can portray your company in an authentic way that will let your customers learn more about you while they follow and engage with your company on social media.
Don’t Be Fake

One important thing is you don’t want to promote too much. I like to live by the 90/10 rule, post 90% good engaging content and promote only 10% of the time. 2. Build Brand Awareness: Social media is a great way to build brand awareness for your company. Even if you use social media for this it makes it very valuable. You don’t always need to promote yourself just add some value and build your brand through the value you can add to others on social media!

If you do social media marketing one thing that you need to do is use the right hashtags. Hashtags are a great way for people to find you and your content on social media.
Why Use Hashtags?
When you use hashtags on your social media posts it helps people find you. It is similar to using keywords for search engines. People use hashtags to find content and people on social media.
Don’t Use Irrelevant Hashtags
So you take your time to post some great content maybe a really cool picture, a custom made graphic, or even a really awesome video now it’s time to post it! The main thing is you want people to see it right? The more people that see your post the better.
Now that you have it ready to post you put your description on it and then comes the time to throw on some hashtags! What kind of hashtags should you use? That’s how you can get more people to see your new awesome post. So you start throwing on some popular or trending hashtags that aren’t even relevant to the post. Maybe if you use the trending topics a lot of people will see your post even if it has nothing to do with the subject! …No don’t do that! People will actually get annoyed or click away super fast if they click on your post and it has nothing to do with the hashtag they were searching. It will also look like spam if the wrong hashtags are used. You don’t want your posts to look like spam so make sure to use relevant hashtags. Keep the hashtags relevant to the topic of your post and niche.
How To Find Effective Hashtags To Use
I actually have a list of different hashtags I use for our business (social media marketing) depending on what kind of post it is. I can quickly go to my list if it’s a motivational post, or social media marketing tip, etc. I have been doing this long enough to know what hashtags to use. The longer you are using social media marketing for your niche the easier it will get to know exactly what kind of hashtags to use.
Some hashtags I use for our social media marketing agency are: #socialmediamarketing #contentmarketing #business #marketing #entrepreneur #digitalmarketing and #socialmediatips just to name a few. It also depends on what kind of post it is. The above mentioned hashtags are usually used if our post has to do with social media marketing or social media marketing tips. If it is a different kind of post we will use different hashtags.
How do you find the right hashtags to use if you are just getting started? One of the absolute best ways to do this is to find other people/businesses in your niche and see what kind of hashtags they are using. Find some of their best performing posts and look at what hashtags they used on those posts.
Another way to find hashtags that are effective is to find Influencers in your niche and see what they are using in their posts for hashtags. This is a great way to find people who know what they are doing and learn from them! If you want to be the best learn from the best.
You can also use your page Analytics or Page Insights to find hashtags to use. Most Analytics and Insights will show you some good info about your audience. You will be able to see what kind of stuff your audience likes or what kind of industry they work in, this info can be very useful when finding hashtags to target the right audience. You can even use third party social media reports to get even more info!
If you have been doing social media marketing start a list of hashtags that work for your business and niche. Try different kinds of hashtags that are similar to see how they work. Once you find a good list of hashtags that work it will be much easier to use hashtags that can target the right audience and in turn lead to better engagements on your social media posts.

Make It A Two Way Conversation On Social Media
It’s OK to post stuff and to get your information out on social media. Put out some great content, but don’t ignore your audience while doing it. Make it a point to interact with people on social media whenever you can.
Put Your Loudspeaker Down For A Minute
Don’t keep yelling out your message on social media! Have you ever been to a party and get stuck talking to a person who just wants to talk about themselves? Nobody wants to be around that person and that is the way social media works these days. Make it a two way conversation.
Like Others Posts
Go out of your way to like other peoples posts. “Like” the stuff you really do like. Don’t just start throwing “likes” around acting as if you just hit the “Like Jackpot”! I know they are unlimited, but “like” things on social media that you truly like and be authentic. I admit I used to “like” others posts just to be nice or to return the favor because they “like” my posts. I don’t do that anymore I only “like” posts that are really cool or inspiring or funny or awesome or… well you get the point.
Comment On Others Posts
Commenting on others posts on social media is a great way to connect. It beats out just hitting the “like” button. It lets the other person know that you read their post or that you really do like the picture or video they posted. This is a great way to interact with people and to form relationships on social media! Commenting on others posts will also get them curious and they will check out your profile to learn about you.
I comment on things that I really want to comment on. Some people just leave emoji’s. Which is fine, but it’s not the greatest way to connect when commenting. Words are more powerful and show that you actually payed attention to their post. I like to leave emoji’s here and there (especially on Instagram) cause it’s fast and easy, but whenever you have the time make sure to write a good comment. Don’t just always leave emoji’s.
Leave A Direct Message (DM)
Send someone a nice direct message on social media. Be personable and let them know you like following them. Maybe ask them if they had any questions you can help them with. Even ask them for some advice. I love when people ask me for advice about social media marketing or about business.
Whatever you do when leaving a direct message don’t spam people. Most will ignore you or worse delete you.
Be genuine in your approach. Have a real desire to help them or add value when you can. Never leave an automated direct message. It just feels too robotic and not very personal.
Be A Social Media Superstar!
Interacting with people on social media is fun! I love meeting new people and possible new business contacts on social media. I will rarely promote myself on social media. I just want to add value and have fun while doing it!
I know it takes time to interact with people all the time on social media. It can really drain the time if you do it too much. Find the right balance even if it’s just five minutes on each social media platform per day. Something is better than nothing. You will be amazed at the new connections and relationships you form when interacting more on social media.

When you are on social media don’t do shady things and think people won’t notice. I know I notice when people do shady things and I remember them. Have great social media etiquette and people will notice you.
Follow Then Unfollow Soon After
I can’t say this enough, don’t do this it is very bad practice on social media. I understand that people unfollow others all the time, and that is fine. What I really hate is somebody who does this all the time as a daily or weekly process to build their social media accounts.
That’s like putting your hand out to shake another persons hand and when they go to shake your hand you pull your hand back. Don’t leave people hanging…MAN!
People do this to me and then I see them follow me again a month or two down the road because I unfollowed them, but they don’t remember that I caught on to their little trick and I won’t follow them back. Of course they unfollow anyway, but at least they didn’t bait me again!
I notice that on a social media platform like Instagram (follow me, it will be the best decision you make today!) someone will follow you, they will have 25,000 followers, but they only follow 200 people. To me that is a red flag that someone is following me only to unfollow me soon after I follow them. I won’t follow these people back and just as predicted they unfollow me within 24 hours. Look for this when people follow you and then you won’t have to be fooled by these shady people on social media. This is only a sample of a small percentage of people not everyone does this.
My main point about this is don’t be that person. They are annoying and I will tell them anytime I can. Social media is there to be social and to get to know people not to play games with following and unfollowing people. I can see unfollowing someone who has not followed you back after awhile, but when someone did follow you back and then to unfollow them right after is SHADY!! Not Slim Shady, Marshall Mathers/Eminem that is a cool kind of shady. Don’t be those people, be cool like Slim Shady!
Automated DM’s (Direct Messages)
I think most people who don’t do this can agree with me this is also an annoying thing people do on social media. I can tell just looking at the subject line if someone sent me an automated message. Of course I never respond to these or even read them. I will never set up automated direct messages. If I’m going to respond to someone or thank them for following me I will do it with a genuine message created by me at that time.
I know that people do this and it’s not horrible, but if you can, do your best not to have automated messages go out to your audience. People love to hear from people and automated direct messages seem too robotic.
Don’t Leave Spammy Comments
You would be surprised how many people do this. I get it you are on social media to build your business and awareness, but you need to be careful how you do it. Leaving spam comments on others profiles is very bad social media etiquette. A lot of people will delete the spam comments or worse delete or block you! This is a no brainer, people know if they are leaving spam or not.
I have to admit about 7-8 years ago I used to do that stuff and thought there was nothing wrong with it. I was wrong even back then and today it is even worse to leave spam comments. Don’t be like me 8 years ago, be like me today! Leave value or compliments in comments and people will notice and they will come to you without you even needing to promote yourself.
Just Be Fun and Social
By reading this you now know what some bad social media etiquette is. I’m sure that most of you don’t do any of the things mentioned above. For those who do this stuff mentioned above on social media I have two words for you STOP IT!!!

Use social media to be fun and social. That’s really all there is to it when it comes to using social media the right way. I know there is a lot when it comes to social media marketing and the more we know the better we will all get at it. Talk to others on social media like you would talk to friends even if you don’t know them. Who knows they might actually turn into real friends outside of social media or great business partners in the future!

I can’t say it enough! Make sure that you are on track to meet the goals you set out for social media marketing. Each platform offers different, but very useful analytic reports. Most of which are very detailed. Below is a sample from my Twitter Analytics.
Find Content That Is Working
Using social media analytics will be a great way to find out which content and posts are getting the best response. As you can see from my Twitter account above it shows what my top tweet is for the month. This will help when I decide what other content to create and post in the future. I can also find out what some of the other better performing tweets were for that month or past months. If you don’t take advantage of this great and free info you are just going about it like a blind little mouse. Don’t be a blind little mouse. Use these analytics to your advantage and become Mighty Mouse!!
Best Days and Times
When going through your social media analytics really go over the daily posts and see what days and times worked best when posting on your social media pages. This can really help you pinpoint the absolute best times to post. Also look at the worst times when the numbers where down. You will not want to post at these times, because your audience may not be active on social media at those times. You really want to take advantage of the times that your audience is most active. If you are posting when your audience is not on social media then what’s the point!
Study Each Social Media Analytics Platform
Each social media platform has a different setup and feel for their analytics. Get familiar with how they are laid out. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+ all have very good information for analytics. They have different layouts with different ways to read the analytics. Take the time to get to know how to read them. Once you get more familiar it will be easier to take full advantage of the great info and analytics they are giving you.
Take good notes of each social media platform and their analytics. You can do hand written notes (what I do) or you can take screen shots and print them off and put notes right on the printed sheet. Some people export the analytics into a spreadsheet. Whatever way you do it, make sure to take notes! Refer to these notes often when scheduling posts.
It Takes Time
It will take time to get a good feel as to what is working and what is not working when posting on social media. At first you can just start out posting the best possible content you can, when you can. After the first month take a look at the analytics and start your process of analyzing each social media platform to find out what is working best for your niche and business.
If you have already been posting for awhile and you haven’t taken a good look at your social media analytics it’s time to get to it! Find out what content is working and when the best time to post on social media is. Each social media platform is going to be different as to when the best time to post will be. Each social media platform is going to be different when it comes to what kind of content is best.
Schedule Time To Read Your Social Media Analytics
If you schedule time it will be easier to get on a routine for this. I look them over once a week for my account and my clients accounts. Once a week I will do a quick overview of each social media platform. Once per month I will do a more detailed look. This is when I really take notes and adjust my social media marketing campaigns strategies and goals. Whatever you plan to do pick a schedule and stick to it to get good consistent results.
If you really want to master social media marketing then you need to make sure you keep up with your social media analytics. Don’t ignore the very awesome information that these social media platforms are just handing you. This is a great era in marketing! The information we have now compared to just 10 years ago is astonishing! Make it work for you and you will be glad you took the time.

Would you find your content valuable? Think about that as you create valuable content for your your readers and prospective customers. It’s a great way to evaluate if what you are offering in terms of value is good. No I take that back, you want GREAT content not just good!
Create A Blog With Great Content!
A great way you can add value includes having a good Blog. This will give your readers/customers a look into your process and knowledge. It will also give them an idea of your personality. Write for your customers not for SEO. If you write great content the SEO will take care of itself. Focus more on how you can help your customers not how you can rank high up in the search engines. Plus writing for SEO can make you look boring and obvious to the people who know what you are doing.

Thunder and Lightning Approach
Using social media and your blog will be a great 1-2 punch when it comes to giving your customers or potential customers some great value. Using both as a “Thunder and Lighting” approach to really make a good impression. Try to make them correspond to your brand and identity. Stick to what you know and write and post about that subject. Add some humor to both your blog and social media. Maybe add some really cool facts about your industry that you know your customers will love.
Figure out what your customers like and keep them engaged on both your blog and social media. It will take some time to really find out what your customers really want and like, so keep at it until you get a really good idea.
Add value, value, some more value, then ask for their business. Better yet just add as much value as you possibly can and maybe you won’t even have to ask. Customers will come to you because they like you and what you are offering them before they even become your customers.
It will take a little time to get new customers from your “Valuable Content Strategy” so be patient. Once they come it will be like the movie “Field of Dreams” when all the people are lining up to see you. Build your dream through valuable and intriguing content. Who knows maybe Ray Liotta will come out from nowhere and read it. Then maybe play a little catch with you!
